The Czechoslovak Federal Assembly as a key institution of the fall of communism

In retrospect of last two decades, the Czechoslovak Federal Assembly increasingly appears as a key institution of the fall of communism in 1989 and subsequent constitution of the new political and legal system. This contrasts with the clear lack of knowledge about development of the Federal Assembly inhibiting any deeper and more structured reflection of this key period, in which the current system of Czech and Slovak parliamentary democracy took shape.

Call for papers: ‘Political Legitimacy and the Paradox of Regulation’

The Leiden research profile area on Political Legitimacy invites paper proposals for the international conference ‘Political Legitimacy and the Paradox of Regulation’. The central question is whether the increase of regulations has helped or hindered the legitimacy of political systems, including modern democracies. While legitimacy is a contested concept, most contemporary accounts take that popular legitimacy, the idea that power should be justified in the eyes of the people, is an important topic. The role of regulation in achieving legitimate rule has been and will remain an important research question in many academic disciplines. We invite paper applications to one of the eight workshops.
