Prague/Berlin. On October 26/27, 2011 parliamentary historians from several European countries discussed the “Lebenswelten” (Alfred Schütz) of parliamentarians at an international conference in Prague. The papers dealt with career paths of MPs, their private lives, and the daily routines of parliament throughout the 19th and 20th century. Thus they added substantial evidence to our knowledge of the professionalization of politics in several European countries from Britain to Hungary. Another focus was put on the context of media coverage on parliament and the practices of self-dramatization of politicians.

The Prague conference was conceptualized and organized by KGParl (Berlin) and Tomáš-Masaryk-Institute (Prague). The meeting was the second part of a conference series on “Parliamentary Cultures in Europe” that began last year in Berlin.
