Brief report: Conference "Century of Women MPs"

On 5-7 September, London's University of Westminster and the History of Parliament hosted the "Century of Women MPs" conference. What seemed to be an event commemorating the extension of electoral rights of 1918 in the UK, turned out be a fascinating picture of British female pioneers in Parliament as well as later presence of women in politics.
EuParl.net was there, Carla von Baalen talked about a clash about women's employment in the Dutch parliament in the 1950s and Adéla Gjuričová described the puzzle of female representation in communist legislatures.

The Czech National Council: The Roots and Faces of a National Parliament

The Czech Chamber of Deputies hosted a conference organized by the Institute of Contemporary History in Prague. It dealt with the 1968 foundation of the Czech National Council, the first Czech legislature within Czechoslovakia.

The conference explored the roots and different faces of the sub-federal National Council: two decades of socialist parliamentarianism (or was it not?) in late Communist dictatorship as well as its democratization after 1989.
