Conference "Entering the Parliamentary Stage – Women in Parliament and Politics in international Comparison"

 

Although the movement for women’s suffrage communicated transnationally and was linked internationally, the common goal of introducing women’s suffrage was achieved at very different times and under unequal conditions: while the spectacular actions of the British suffragettes only achieved gradual success from 1920 onwards, in Finland a not particularly strong women’s movement had already asserted itself in 1906. In France, on the other hand, the right to vote was only introduced after the Second World War.

Brief report: Conference "Century of Women MPs"

On 5-7 September, London's University of Westminster and the History of Parliament hosted the "Century of Women MPs" conference. What seemed to be an event commemorating the extension of electoral rights of 1918 in the UK, turned out be a fascinating picture of British female pioneers in Parliament as well as later presence of women in politics.
EuParl.net was there, Carla von Baalen talked about a clash about women's employment in the Dutch parliament in the 1950s and Adéla Gjuričová described the puzzle of female representation in communist legislatures.
